As a former Primary Family Dementia Caregiver, Phyllis’ mission is to help family dementia caregivers find spiritual strength, endurance, and daily support – through prayer, encouragement, Bible studies, and practical support for the journey. Therefore, she founded A Better Way of Living – Dementia Caregiver Support.
Phyllis has served as a member of the Board of Directors of The Purple Sherpa, Inc. Phyllis has also served as a Support Group Leader for the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina. Both entities are non-profit charitable organizations that support the family caregivers of loved ones diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia. She is also a Sr. Elder and very active in her local church. Phyllis, a graduate of the University of Memphis, is also a Presidential member of the American Association for Christian Counselors.
Phyllis is also an experienced trainer, speaker, mentor, group facilitator, and coach. Along with her husband, Phyllis has intermittently served as a caregiver to various family members for decades—including her mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. After over five years of caring for her mother long-distance, she and her husband brought Phyllis’ mother into their home to serve as her primary family caregivers for over five more years until her death.
Phyllis has long been passionate about helping others, especially family caregivers. She encourages others to lean on their faith in God as they overcome life’s challenges. She has authored a book, “I Can’t Believe This Is Happening to Me!” Alzheimer’s Disease – Primary Family Caregiver, about the wisdom, resources, and self-care needed to navigate the misconceptions, stumbling blocks, and challenges of being a Primary Family Caregiver to a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia. She loves joy, laughter, honesty, and the pursuit of excellence in all things.
